Tost Tosonbumba Landscape approach

Tost Tosonbumba Nature Reserve

The Tost Tosonbumba area in the South Gobi Province of South Mongolia is a unique environment for both humans and wildlife. It consists of desert steppe and rugged dry mountains with an altitude range between 1600m and 2400m above mean sea level. Tost Tosombumba neighbors the Great Gobi Strictly Protected Area A to the south west and the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park to the north, forming an important corridor for wildlife. These 3 national parks along with other National Parks are part of the GSLEP South Gobi Landscape (82000 km2)- a priority landscape for snow leopard conservation in Mongolia identified by the national government

Comprehensive Approach to conservation management to Tost, South Gobi Landscape

A landscape approach is needed to protect large carnivores, such as the snow leopard. Snow leopard individuals are known to have large home ranges (averaging c. 200 sq.km for males and 140 sq.km for females in the South Gobi) and therefore protecting a population requires protecting large areas of over 1000km2. Protecting such large areas and ensuring connectivity between suitable habitats needs an inclusive approach, where people co-exist with carnivores and other wildlife.

One of the most important conservation stakeholders continues to be local herding communities in this landscape. Local communities have been actively involved in the conservation of snow leopards and other wildlife in Tost Bag. Since 2008 herder communities have been involved in community-based conservation (CBC) programs such as Snow Leopard Enterprises, Livestock Insurance and Predator Proof Corrals programs. These community efforts have annually involved approximately 50-60 herder households of Tost Bag. We also run the Long Term Ecological Study (LTES) and Building capacity of NR, Eco-camping programs.

Over the next 5 years SLCF aims to further strengthen conservation efforts in Tost through a combined research and conservation strategy. This includes enhancing the existing knowledge base of snow leopard ecology, a sustained effort in supporting the Tost NR team through capacity building, a focus on supporting community-based conservation efforts through Community Responsible Areas (CRA), and building links between Tost NR and the South Gobi Landscape. The components provide a comprehensive conservation strategy for Tost
